Signs Your Subfloor Is Damaged

The subfloor is the structural layer of wood panels or boards that sits directly beneath your finished flooring — tile, hardwood, carpet, or vinyl. It connects your finished floor to the joists below and plays a critical role in the stability and feel of your floors.

When the subfloor is damaged, you feel it every time you walk across the room.

Common Signs of Subfloor Damage

Soft or Spongy Spots
The most recognizable sign of subfloor damage is a floor that feels soft, spongy, or gives slightly underfoot. This indicates that the subfloor panel has lost its rigidity — usually due to moisture damage or rot.

Bouncy or Flexible Floors
A floor that bounces when you walk across it may have subfloor panels that have delaminated or weakened between joist supports.

Squeaking and Creaking
While some squeaking is normal in older homes, persistent or worsening squeaks — especially in localized areas — can indicate that subfloor panels have separated from the joists below.

Visible Dips or Waves
When viewed from a low angle, a damaged subfloor may show visible dips, waves, or uneven surfaces that telegraph through the finished flooring above.

Finished Flooring Damage
Buckled hardwood, cracked tile, or rippled vinyl flooring can all be symptoms of subfloor movement or deterioration beneath.

Odors
A musty or damp smell coming from the floor — particularly in one area — may indicate that the subfloor has absorbed moisture and begun to deteriorate.

What Causes Subfloor Damage?

- Plumbing leaks from above or below
- Elevated crawlspace humidity over time
- Flooding or standing water events
- Age and normal wear in older homes
- Termite or insect activity

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I repair subfloor damage myself?
Minor surface repairs may be DIY-friendly, but structural subfloor damage — particularly when caused by rot or joist failure — requires a licensed contractor to ensure the repair is safe and complete.

How do I find soft spots in my subfloor?
Walk slowly across the floor and pay attention to areas that feel different underfoot. Press down firmly in suspect areas. A contractor can also probe from the crawlspace below.

Does subfloor damage always mean the joists are damaged too?
Not always, but the two often occur together. A crawlspace inspection will determine whether joist damage is also present.
