Why Doors Suddenly Stick

Structural Settlement

Why Do Doors Suddenly Stick? | Florida Crawlspace Repair

A door that suddenly starts sticking, dragging, or refusing to latch is more than an inconvenience. In many cases, it's one of the earliest and most reliable signs that your home's structure is moving.

Why Doors Stick

Doors are precision-fit to their frames. When the structure of a home shifts — even slightly — door frames rack out of square and the door no longer fits properly. The result is a door that sticks at the top, drags at the bottom, or fails to latch.

Crawlspace Structural Movement

When support posts sink, beams deflect, or joists fail in the crawlspace, the floor drops in the affected area. This movement transfers upward through the walls, causing door frames to shift out of plumb and square.

Seasonal Wood Movement

Wood expands and contracts with changes in temperature and humidity. In Florida, seasonal humidity swings can cause doors to stick temporarily — particularly in summer. If sticking resolves on its own with the seasons, it may be normal wood movement rather than structural.

Foundation Movement

Settlement or shifting of the foundation can also cause door frames to rack. This typically affects multiple doors and windows simultaneously and may be accompanied by exterior cracks.

How to Tell If Sticking Doors Are a Structural Problem

Structural causes are more likely when:
- The sticking developed suddenly rather than gradually with the seasons
- Multiple doors or windows are affected
- The sticking is getting progressively worse
- Other symptoms are present — sloping floors
